We had to remove this Silver Maple due to root intrusion into the drainage system. But, it all went to great use. The smaller limbs were chipped and spread back into the yard, larger branches taken for firewood, and best of all, @windwood_llc hauled away and slabbed the trunk. Curves are important! Making them elongated or too acute can negate the positive visual effects of landscaping. There is even a golden ratio signified by the greek letter “phi” to help solve this issue. Our portion of this project was the design and installation of Basalt Bubbler Fountain and Stone walkway with steel edging. The customer desired the calming effects of bubbling water, a spot to relax, and a pathway across the grass yard. These cherry trees (among many others) were originally planted by the Builders. While their intentions were good, they set these trees up for failure through general construction compaction and poor soil conditions. Walking through this common area there were many trees with cankers and in poor health. Due to the length, size, and proximity to the homes, the decision was made for the removal of several trees. If you look at the yellow arrow/circle, it shows a canker that opened on the tree. Below that on the stump you can see how it rotted the exposed area. The outlined purple area shows where an offshoot grew then was cut. It was a good decision as it would never have had a good connection to the trunk and so wouldve had a higher likelihood of failure in the future. Overall if you look at the ratio of heartwood (dead inner lighter colored wood) to the sapwood (live outer orange wood), the tree was dying faster than it was growing.

Sometimes we let things grow and forget about it. One day this homeowner woke up and realized a giant oak tree had grown directly against the house and causing foundation issues. So, we were brought in for removal as split homes are currently not in vogue. It was a good thing we removed this tree. Upon cutting the tree, we found the heartwood(dark inner portion) growth was outpacing sapwood growth (outer lighter wood) This meant the tree was dying faster than it was growing. While still a healthy tree at the time of removal, unless the factors contributing to its decline were reversed (signs of vascular disease) there is a high likelihood this tree wouldve posed as a danger to the home. Instead of entering the house from the foundation, it wouldve entered through the roof and still been a most unwelcome visitor. #arborist #chozengardens #treeservice #treeremoval

This big branch resting peacefully on the roof/gutter had to be removed today. This branch initially broke during the first big snowstorm at the end of December and then survived all the subsequent freeze, snow, and wind. But it had to go! There is a sidewalk below and it was going to wreak havoc if it ever fell off the roof. Homeowner would have likely found the window broken, gutter ripped, and siding torn. Upon arrival our winch decided to take the day off (it started working just as we completed the job) so we resorted to the tried-and-true old school rigging and human muscle to safely extrictate this limb from the homeowners property. #chozengardens #arborist #treeremoval #treetrimming #treeservice

On the bright side, it didnt hit the house and no one was hurt. One car was even able to drive away after removing the logs. These trees likely failed due to a combination of factors -Two large diameter trees nearby had been removed which exposed these two trees to full windspeeds -Concrete driveway on both sides prevented the tree from expanding its roots to provide more stability. Probably the greatest factor in its downfall as roots grow much further than a trees dripline. -Compacted clay soil underneath the tree did not allow the tree to penetrate deeper into the soil. Trees normally only grow 18”-24” deep roots but is compensated in structure by outlying roots. In this case, the concrete driveways did not allow this to happen. -All these factors combined with heavy ice/snow and winds likely became too much for the tree trunks and roots to stabilize and resulted in its downfall. #arborist #chozengardens #treeremoval #trees #tree #treeremovalexperts

Alot of this going on due to the recent snow/ice/windstorm. In this tree, there were alot of rot running throughout the tree, but, in the end it was likely root rot located in the buttress roots which caused this failure. If you look closely, you can see the thicker roots are completely rotted. Upon inspection and seeing no visible fungal fruiting bodies, it would have been difficult to predict this event without more invasive tests. A preventative measure would have been to reduce the weight through careful pruning. “Luckily” the tiny house along with the large limbs broke the fall of the tree with minor roof damage and avoided the house. While anyone can pick up a chainsaw and cut wood, it takes skill, experience, and carefully placed cuts to safely remove this tree without causing further damage. #arborist #chozengardens #tree #treeservice

Sometimes we just have to call in the heavy equipment operators. This 42” diameter Douglas Fir had recently passed. We were tasked with its removal as the homeowner was not keen on taking on another roommate when it eventually fell over. Located on a steep hillside with constrained access and several targets at risk below we contemplated a plan. Our first attempt for removal by hand occurred on a cold and windy friday morning. Halfway up, it was determined to be too risky with too strong of winds. These winds could unexpectedly topple the dead tree during the removal process due to the forces exerted by dropping logs. Its never good to have surprises in this industry. So we contacted a crane company and came back the next day during favorable weather conditions to successfully execute the tree removal. Unfortunately we had to remove this 100+ year old oak (ring count said 150 but its easy to get lost). It was Infested with terminates, rotting, and in a severe state of decline. Since this Oak was located on a commercial lot, it likely received a combination of abiotic factors from vehicles backing into it along with pollutants that made it more vulnerable to biotic factors. All combined, it caused an irreversible decline in vitality and vigor. Emergency Tree Branch Removal! Normally these happen during the winter due to snow/ice/heavy winds. However, longer periods of high temps have resulted in less supple tree limbs due to dehydration. These factors combined with heavily branched limbs results in limb failures among healthy trees. While there may have been other factors which lead to branch failure, bugs or fungus did not seem to be the leading cause. Trees need moisture to remain limber and absorb gravitational stress. The best example would be the bending of a wet spaghetti noodle versus a dry one. Mitigation measures would have been to proactively thin the limbs to reduce the weight on this outstretched branch. But, it would have been hard for any professional arborist to observe and predict this would happen. Sometimes these are just the risks we take when living with trees in an urban environment. #arborist #chozengardens #treeservice
