The Emerald Ash Borer, a small invasive beetle known to kill 90% of ash trees it infests has been found at Hazeldale park on SW Rosa Road. News broke in early September of this year after several new confirmed infestations were found in the wider Portland area, including at the Aloha park. The discovery means there is a rough timeline of under 10 years before infested Ash trees in the area will be dead or dying, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry.

Aloha area certified arborist Albert Cho from Chozen Gardens said that because the EAB infestation isn’t highly visible yet that people don’t understand the impact the EAB will have on their neighborhoods. Ash trees along neighborhood streets and those providing shade in backyards will face a similar future dieback.

“I tell them, hey, these are all going to be gone,” Cho said. “The greenery that they have in their background, it’s all going to go and they just, it still hasn’t hit people yet.”

French Drains

Location: Bethany, Oregon

Situation : Client had recently seen the side of her house flood after heavy rains. This was new in the past year or two. The neighbor had recently installed a French drain and was suspected of improper installation. To combat the water flooding issue, the client was manually digging a small swale using an ice cream scooper to divert the water 70' downstream (it worked pretty well!) but it was not a long term solution as it could easily clog with debris.

Our Actions : First, we dug and observed. We dug to see if the ground was saturated from groundwater movement. In the sample sites, we found very hard and dry compacted clay which reduced (but not totally ruled out) ground water issues. Then the customer observed and sent pictures of the neighbors drain and water flowing into their yard. While we never dug up the neighbor's french drain, we're pretty certain it was improperly installed somewhere, most definitely at the connection to the drain.

Then we identified a source for stormwater drainage which was located around the perimeter of the house (not all homes have this). From there we dug ~70' trench at a gentle slope and bored underneath the sidewalk, placed drainage rock below and above a 4" socked and perforated pipe to tie into the stormwater drain.

Elevation was on our side so we were able to negate the need for a sump pump which not only saved on costs, but the potential for mechanical/electrical failure. The homeowner now no longer has drainage issues.

Don't bandage, treat the drainage issue at the source

Situation : Client had been talking with 2-3 different companies to resolve their drainage issue. Essentially, where their basement which was once dry, now happened to take on water in the past 3 years. The neighbor was identified as potentially diverting drainage water down the hillside into the client's property.

We arrived on a rainy day to observe. We made the conclusion that it was not from the hillside/neighbor as the rate of water accumulation was not consistent with surface water runoff. Judging by the way the water welled up in hole, it was determined to be groundwater. The root cause as to why there were groundwater issues now versus a few years ago was not definitively identified. However, with the amount of construction which = compaction ongoing in the area, we surmised it had diverted the underground water channel towards the client's home.

Previous contractors had simply suggested installed a sump tank in the basement and breaking the concrete after the water had entered the building, but since we could see where all the water was coming from, we instead installed a water pit with sump pump which fed into the existing French drain. This saved the customer $$ thousands as we did not have to break up concrete inside and run a large amount of piping while also requiring them to constantly monitor for mold issues inside the home.
